Artist Statement

I explore the boundaries of time, process, and materials, more specifically, what can happen on a sheet of paper. My primary medium is cameraless photography, although my work also includes historic photographic processes, papermaking, printmaking, and different oils in my kitchen.

Driven by a curiosity to understand how images are made, I focus on photographic methods of creation, rather than the content of an image. This often leads me to try procedures that simplify the photographic process and require as few elements as possible. Photography is a medium I can physically engage with. I use my hands to manipulate materials on a sheet of paper in many different ways.

I draw on the principles of the printing-out process that dominated paper-based photography in the last half of the 19th century. My interest in photography’s historical techniques is one of the reasons I came to pursue it over other media. It has a very limited history, and I am interested in interacting with this history using modern materials.

My projects are collected, published, and exhibited in galleries, including the Center of Art Design and Visual Culture in Baltimore, and Walter Grove Memorial Art Gallery in La Plata. Currently, I teach classes and workshops in graphic design, papermaking, printmaking, screenprinting, and darkroom and digital photography at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center and the College of Southern Maryland.
